Nearly BGN 5 billion worth of battery energy storage projects have been submitted for funding under the RESTORE program

The RESTORE program focuses on building renewable energy storage infrastructure, with a budget of nearly BGN 1.2 billion. Initially launched two years ago, its goal was to install at least 3,000 MWh of battery capacity. At the time, this seemed challenging. However, technological advancements and falling prices have allowed for greater capacity. The budget is now expected to provide over 6,000 MWh. This could significantly impact the power system. The batteries would cover around one-third of electricity demand during the evening peak (7-9 pm), when prices are highest due to the drop in solar power generation.
The key question is whether Bulgaria can meet the EU’s requirements to secure the billions allocated under the Recovery and Sustainability Plan (RSP), or if it will need to fund the projects using its own resources. Meeting the EU’s criteria is crucial to accessing the full funding, but failure to do so may force the country to explore alternative financing options for its ambitious projects.
